DOMITIUS ALEXANDER (309 - 311)
Follis, Carthago. IMP ALEXANDER P F AVG, Büste mit Kranz nach rechts. Rs. ROMAE AETERNAE AVG N, im Abschnitt P*K, Roma nach links thronend auf der vorgestreckten Rechten Weltkugel haltend, mit der erhobenen Linken Lanze. RIC VI 435 Nr. 76. 3,61g. Extrem selten. Sehr schön. Domitius Alexander was the vicarius Africae in the years 303-309. When in spring 309 the emperor Maxentius demanded Alexander's son as a hostage, Dom. Alexander proclaimed himself as emperor of Africa. Immediately Carthage mint started to produce coins with his portrait. The African emperor succeeded in bringing Sardinia under his sway and in interrupting the delivery of African corn to Rome, causing a severe shortage of bread in the capital. For that reason in autumn 309/spring 310 Maxentius dispatched a small, but effective military unit that struck down the uprising and executed Dom. Alexander.
