PARION
Bronze, 3. - 2. Jh. Girlandengeschmückter Altar, rechts davon A. Rs: Kranz, darin [PA]/R I. SNG France 3, 1396; Price - Trell, Coins and their Cities, 56 fig. 98 and 118. 4,81g. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich/sehr schön. This coin depicts the huge altar of Parion in honour of Apollon Aktaios, built by the architect Hermokreon, mentioned by Strabon (XIII 1, 13) and the Greek proverb "The altar of Parion!", meaning that a sumptuous monument gobbled up a lot of money. Some people reckoned the altar to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
