Marrying the Byzantine emperor Leo IV. she had a profound impact on the history of Europe. After the death of Leo IV. in 780 she reigned ten years for her minor son Constantine VI. who dethroned her in 790. By the intermediation of the Byzantine political establishment Irene and Constantine VI. reigned conjointly from 792 to 797. Then by deposing her son she gained the sole reign. In 800 Charlemagne took advantage of the woman's rule in Constantinople and established the Holy Roman Empire by being crowned emperor in Rome. Therefore Irene was deprived of her emperorship and banned into a monastery where she died in 803.
