COLLECTION GALLIA DES MONNAIES FRANCAISES
SECOND EMPIRE, 1852-1870.
SPECIMEN. 5 Francs 1861, Paris. Pré-série de l'essai (Grosse étoile). NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR. Effigie laurée à gauche // EMPIRE FRANCAIS. Armoiries de l'empire, écu rond.
D'une insigne rareté. Probablement unique. Exemplaire de toute beauté,
avec magnifique patine aux reflets d'azur Dans un slab PCGS, gradée Essai SP 63+ - FDC

This unique Specimen can be described as “the Specimen of the Specimen”. Recognisable by the stars on obverse and reverse, this was the model for the later pattern issue with the letter E (for Essai).

This Specimen might well have been admired and held by Louis Napoleon Bonaparte himself, as he gave his final approval for the use of this design and Portrait.

In addition to its rarity and historical importance, its high grade and extremely charming toning makes this piece exceptional and a must have for any serious collector of Napoleon III coinage.
