The Roman Empire
Octavian as Augustus, 27 BC – 14 AD
Octavian received the honourary title of Augustus on 16th January 27. His portrait style as Augustus is a continuation of his ageless portraits used after the battle of Actium, culminating in Augustus’ most famous portrait, that of Prima Porta. It was named after a completely preserved statue, now in the Vatican museum, that was found at the site of Livia's villa near Prima Porta outside of Rome. AMP. Sestertius, Asia (Pergamum ?) circa 25 BC, Æ 24.60 g. AVGVSTVS Bare head r. Rev. CA within wreath. C p. 164, 791. BMC 713. RIC 501 (Circa 28-15 BC). CBN 956. RPC 2233.
A peculiar portrait and a wonderful untouched enamel-like olive green
patina somewhat broken on the edge. Usual adjustments marks,
otherwise about extremely fine / extremely fine Augustus’portraits on sestertii are limited to these Eastern ones and those of Lugdunum, the latter very generic in their stylistical elements. This specimen has a fascinating portrait style. AMP.
