The Roman Empire
Octavian as Augustus, 27 BC – 14 AD
Denarius, Colonia Patricia (?) circa 19 BC, AR 3.91 g. CAESAR – AVGVSTVS Bare head r. Rev. SIGNIS / S – P / Q – R / RECEPTIS Aquila, on l., and standard, on r., flanking shield inscribed CL V. C 265.
BMC 417. RIC 86a. CBN 1132.
Wonderful old cabinet tone, obverse slightly off-centre, otherwise extremely fine Augustus’ portraits differ considerably among the mints of Spain, Gaul, Rome, and the ones in the East. This is a typical example of a Spanish portrait, from Colonia Patricia. AMP.
