The Roman Empire
Octavian as Augustus, 27 BC – 14 AD
Denarius, Lugdunum circa 2 BC – 4 AD, AR 3.83 g. CAESAR AVGVSTVS – DIVI F PATER PATRIAE Laureate head r. Rev. AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT Caius and Lucius standing facing, each togate and resting hand on shield; behind each shield a spear. Above on l., simpulum r. and on r., lituus l. In exergue, CL CAESARES. C 43. BMC 533. RIC 207. CBN 1657. Good extremely fine This coin is part of the large issues in gold, silver and bronze minted primarily for the legions along the river Rhine. A very typical portrait for the mint of Lugdunum. The images of his intended heirs Caius and Lucius on the reverse are too small to have relevant portrait features. Their portraits however survive in sculpture. AMP
