The Roman Empire
In the name of Livia, wife of Augustus
Dupondius 22-23, Æ 15.11 g. Diademed and draped bust of Livia as Iustitia r.; beneath, IVSTITIA. Rev. TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVG P M TR POT XXIIII around S C. C 4. BMC Tiberius 78. RIC Tiberius 51. CBN Tiberius 57.
A very attractive specimen of this desirable issue. A gentle portrait of fine style and
very pleasant brown-green patina very gently smoothed, otherwise extremely fine Ex Hirsch XXXI, 1912, 1043; Ars Classica XVII, 1934, Evans 1216 and UBS 78, 2008, 1404 sales.
In parallel to the Salus coins, two other series of dupondii were issued; the ”Justitia type” and the ”Pietas type”. The portraits of these two issues are more generic compared to the Salus dupondii. While it has been speculated that the Pietas type may reflect a portrait of Drusus minor's wife Livilla, an attribution to Livia for all these three issues seems most likely. AMP.
