IMPERIAL COINAGE. CONSTANTIUS II, 337-361. Multiple in gold of 1 1/2 solidi with loop, Thessalonica, 357. AV 7.75 g. (with loop). FL IVL CONSTAN - TIVS PERP AVG Draped, cuirassed bust facing, head with rosette-diadem turned l. Rev. FELIX ADVENTVS AVG N / TES Emperor, in military costume and flying cloak on horseback l., raising his r. hand in greeting gesture. RIC VIII, 416, 144 (with similar mount).
Of great rarity. Almost extremely fine

J.P.Kent, RIC VII, 200 puts this special issue (known also from the mints of Arelate, Rome and Antiochia) tentatively in connection with Constantius' formal entry in Rome in April/May of AD 357. Most of the known specimens of this issue come with a contemporary mount, proving, that they were not intended for circulation but represent imperial gifts (donativa) for high ranking officials.
