KÖNIGREICH PAIONIEN. LYKKEIOS (356-335). Tetradrachm. Laurate head of Apollo to left. Rev: ΛYKK-EIOY. Herakles wrestling with nemaean lion to left; bow and club below. SNG Cop - (cf. 1382, Apollo right), SNG ANS - (cf. 1020-1021, same), AMNG III/2 199.3. 12,99g. Rare. Extremely fine.
The master of this mint thought of something smart that would help the coin dies last longer and potentially produce a larger number of coins. He drilled a shallow round hole in the obverse and reverse dies (cheek of Apollo and body of lion), so that the stress of the striking would be focused there as a stopdrill against the die break.
