KINGDOM OF MACEDONIA. PERSEUS, king 179-168 BC. Tetradrachm. AR 17.04 g. Diademed head r. with short beard. Rev. ΒΑΣΙ - ΛΕΩΣ / ΠΕΡ - ΣΕΩΣ Eagle with spread wings standing r. on thunderbolt; high in field, in field r. and between legs, three monograms, all within oak wreath, below, plough. SNG Delepierre 1066 (these dies). Mamroth 21, 15.
Large flan. Light tone. Extremely fine
Provenance: Privately purchased in the 1980's from Münzen und Medaillen AG, Basel. Perseus was the last king of the Antigonid dynasty, who ruled the successor state in Macedon created upon the death of Alexander the Great. After losing the Battle of Pydna on 22 June 168 BC, Macedon came under Roman rule.
