Chute. c.65-58 BC. Gold stater. 17-19mm 6.04g. Wreath pattern with downward-facing leaves./ Disjointed triple-tailed horse left, standing on zigzag exergual line with pellets in angles, shrimp and large blobs above, crab below, ‘coffee bean’ behind. ABC 746, VA 1205, BMC 35-76, DK 302, S 22. Hairline crack, otherwise Good VF/EF, neat flan of pale golden gold, sharply struck shrimp and crab. They don’t come much nicer than this.
Thanks to its large flan this Chute stater gives us a good view of the fish-like hairlocks, the horse (including its three tails), the crazy crab, the shrimp and much of the zigzag in exergue. Dr Daphne Nash Briggs suggests that this ‘sun-horse by night’ is being carried towards day break on the deck of a ‘night-ship’ represented by the curved exergual design.
