Commios A-Type. Sills Class 1.c.50-25 BC. Gold quarter stater. 7-9mm. 1.21g. Letter A on plain field./ Horse left, ladder mane, rings below. ABC 1031, VA 353-5, BMC−, DK 325, S 67. Good EF, chunky flan of rose gold, bonny bold horse. SCARCE.
The A probably stands for Arebates, “given that the Gaulish Commius was made leader of that tribe by Caesar (BG 4.21) and is almost invariably referred to by him as Commius the Atrebatian (BG 4.27, 35; 5.22; 6.6; 8.6; 7, 21, 47)” says Dr John Sills (DK p.322).
