Eppillus Calleva Daisy. Sills class 2, Calleva Plain.c.20BC-AD1. Gold quarter stater. 8mm. 1.15g. CALL[EV], star below, beaded border./ Dog running right, [EPPI] above, pellet daisy below. ABC 1148, VA 407, BMC 986-1001, DK 357, S 96. Good VF, bold pellet daisy, bouncy dog. Found Maidstone, Kent. RARE.
Calleva means ‘in the woods’. Did Eppillus, king of Calleva, go deer-hunting in its woods? Maybe that’s why there’s a running dog on this rare gold coin. This is the only Silchester-minted gold coin of Eppillus known to have been discovered in Cantian territory.
