SICILY. SYRACUSE. Tetradrachm, signed by the master engraver Par(menides), about 405 BC. AR 16.88 g. Fast quadriga l., loose rein draging below the third horse; the driver, wearing sleeveless chiton, holding the reins and the kentron with his l. hand, his r. hand raised; he is crowned by Nike flying r.; in exergue, ear of corn l. Rev. ΣYPAKOΣIΩN Head of Arethusa l., wearing ampyx and spendone decorated with stars, triple pendant earring and necklace; two dolphins in front of the face, a third one behind the head, a fourth one emerging from under the neck truncation; below, artist's signature ΓAP; around, linear circle, all within incuse round.
