Grand Master Raymond Berenger (1365-1374).
The 30th Grand Master, the third in a row to come from Provence, had distinguished himself as a very successful military commander. Soon after his election, the allied forces made a surprise attack on Alexandria, setting fire to the city and burning the entire Egyptian fleet. Two years later, a renewed naval operation struck the bases of Alexandretta, Laodicaea, Tortosa and Tripoli. The Sultan of Egypt, irritated by the constant attacks of the Knights Hospitaliers, threatened Rhodes with retaliation and consequently the defences on the island and the city had to be reinforced, requiring considerable funds from Europe. As some of the contributions failed to arrive, the Grand Master asked the Pope for permission to retire. Other rivalries amongst the knights erupted, but before they could take their quarrels to the Pope in Avignon, Grand Master Berenger died in November 1374.
