Grand Master Robert de Juilly (1374-1376).
De Juilly came from the „tongue“ of France, the family being originally from Meaux. When news of his election reached the new Grand Master, he left his French priory and set out at once to Avignon, in order to receive confirmation from Pope Gregory XI. The Grand Master hastened to take up his post in Rhodes, because Amurat, the son of the deceased Sultan Orchan, was threatening the island with invasion. The first tasks of the Grand Master, was to recruit new troupes from Europe and to strengthen the defences of the island. In September 1376, the Grand Master died, after a reign which had lasted less than two years.
