Grand Master Hugues Loubenx de Verdala, 1582-1595.
Verdala’s reign, like that of de la Cassière’s, was troubled by dissensions within the Order. Things got so bad that he went off to seek the Pope’s aid; as a result, Pope Sixtus V made him a cardinal (though this did not do very much to establish his authority). Perhaps his most attractive legacy was the country palace he built as a hunting box in Boschetto, the highest point on the island. It was surrounded by woods and was used by all the later Grand Masters. Verdala’s coinage follows the pattern of his predecessors.
