Grand Master Martin Garzes, 1595-1601.
Garzes’ reign seems to have been one of consolidation and reconciliation within the Order, freeing it from the jealousies and dissensions that had been the norm earlier. The one major event during his tenure was a raid by the Turks on Gozo in 1597. It was, however, soundly defeated by the Knights who forced the Ottoman troops back to their ships, which then immediately set sail for Algiers. Garzes’ coinage consists of gold, extremely rare silver, and copper.
