The Knights of St. John in Malta. Marcantonio Zondolari, 65th Grand Master, 1720-1722. 4 Zecchini, 1722. AV 13.91 g. F.MARCVS. ANTONIVS. ZONDADARI Bare-headed, cuirassed bust r., low in field r., date 1722 in tiny figures. Rev. M.MAGISTER HOSPITALIS.ET.SS:SEPVLCHRI.HIERV: Crowned cartouche bearing the arms of the Grand Master quartered with those of the Order. Fr. 22; Restelli-Sammut 128, 4 and pl. XLI, 3 (these dies); Schembri 124, 4 var. (date below bust).
Very rare variant of an extremely rare issue. Almost extremly fine
Provenance: Auction Spink & Son, London 63 (1988), 865.
Grand Master Marcantonio Zondadari, 1720-1722.
Zondadari, who was a nephew of Pope Alexander VII, had quite a short reign, but one filled with naval victories over the Turks and the corsairs. He only struck gold, now uniformly very or extremely rare, and silver, also very rare save for the carlini.
