ATHOS Uncertain. Lead seal, 10th-11th centuries. Facing bust of the Theotokos, orans. Rev: ΥΠΕΡΑ / ΓΙΑ - ΘΚΕ / ΤΟΥ-ΑΘω / *ΝΟC* in four lines, between ornaments. Laurent -. Zacos & Veglery -; BLS I -; BLS II -; Jordanov II -. 12,43g. Very rare. Very fine.
The inscription on the reverse loosely translates as such: ''Holier than though, mother of God of Athos''. The text is important as it is a direct reference that connects Theotokos with mount Athos, which is known from tradition as ''the garden of Theotokos''. This seal is a rare example with a sole reference to Theotokos.
