North East Coast. Left Type. Sills Mint B, fig.10. c.60-50 BC. Gold stater. 19mm. 5.85g. Wreath motif with leaves facing inwards, horizontal line of pellets below./ Lunate horse left, pellets and crescent above, ‘coffee bean’ behind, large pellet below, exergual line with zigzag and pellet decoration. ABC 1722, VA 804, BMC 193-99, S 29. EF, large flan of golden gold, wreath and horse standing out in high relief, sharp zigzag. A truly splendid specimen, as fresh as the moment it was minted. SCARCE
If you could see the ‘coffee bean’ to the left of the horse’s head (as on BMC 193 and 194) you’d realise that there is a hidden face here, with the zigzag forming a toothy grin.
