VOLI SIOS in two lines crossed by vertical wreath of brick-like leaves facing inwards./ Lunate horse left, pellet triad under head, DVM NO[CO VEROS] around. ABC 1980, VA 978, BMC 3330-36, S 416. EF/Good VF, large flan of cuprous gold, bold wreath, full VOLISIOS. SCARCE Est. £1000
Very rarely do we see a gold stater with VOLISIOS spelled out so clearly or so completely, thanks to this large-sized well-centred obverse. Volisios ‘The Blood’ was probably a ruler of the Brigantes ‘The High Ones’ and Dumnocoveros ‘Giant of the World’ could have been one of three sons, the other two being Dumnovellaunos ‘Commander of the World’ and Cartivellaunos ‘Strong Ruler’. The north Yorkshire provenance of this impressive gold stater supports our belief that this family was of Brigantian origin.
