Dorchester Y-Type. Sills Insular Xe2. c.60-50 BC. Gold quarter stater. 8mm. 1.65g. Plain hemisphere with narrow rim./ Two bars forming Y-shaped angle. ABC 2145 var., VA−, BMC−, DK 291, S−, Sills 539 var. EF, chunky piece of golden gold, bold Y-shape. Securely provenanced. EXCESSIVELY RARE only five others recorded. Est. £1500
The design of the semi-globular and screamingly scarce Dorchester Y-Type “is probably a modification of the horizontal bar on Gallo-Belgic Xb2 quarters, with the side bar perhaps added to distinguish insular copies from their Belgic prototype” says Dr John Sills in Divided Kingdoms, p.258. This is one of the earliest and most golden of all Durotrigan coins.
