1918/7-D 5C FS-101 AU50 PCGS Secure. The 1918/7-D is an extremely important wartime hubbing error that is traditionally collected as an integral part of the Buffalo nickel series. The issue escaped the notice of contemporary numismatists and only became widely known in the 1930s, after Barney Bluestone described a specimen in an October, 1931-dated auction catalog. By the time numismatic awareness of the issue became widespread, the coins had been circulating for two decades and high-grade examples were extremely difficult to locate. The present coin is an impressive AU specimen with lightly abraded lavender-gray surfaces that show a few hints of greenish-gold and amber toning. The 1918/7-D was not a well-struck issue, and this example exhibits just a trace of softness on the lightly worn design elements. A diagnostic die break is evident above the tie in the braid, slanting slightly down toward the Indian's mouth. Satiny luster shines through the patina. The overall presentation is quite attractive for this important key issue.HID05401242017
