1828 25C PR62 PCGS Secure. B-4, R.7 as a proof. While the exact proof mintage of 1828 quarters is unrecorded, conventional wisdom suggests no more than about a dozen true proofs were struck. Most proofs were from the Browning-4 die pair (six to eight proofs known), with Browning-1 accounting for a few more examples. Reports of one or two Browning-2 proofs are unconfirmed and are now thought to be prooflike circulation strikes. To our knowledge, this Browning-4 example has been absent from public auction for more than 15 years. In some previous appearances, it was thought to be the former Cleneay specimen, but later research -- augmented by greater access to early catalog images -- has clarified the pedigree. We note that the present coin is sharply struck on all of the stars, while the Cleneay coin is softly struck on stars 4 to 7, and this proof is indeed more sharply struck throughout both sides than the Cleneay piece. The earliest auction appearance we can confirm is the Henry Chapman sale of the George Earle Collection in June 1912. Subsequent appearances describe the coin as Choice proof or finer, not out of line for then-current standards. Certainly, the eye appeal alone is suggestive of the Choice level. A few tiny marks and stray hair-thin lines temper the glittering, mirrored surfaces, yet the proof status of this important, well-pedigreed piece is unquestioned, and it fits comfortably within the Rea-Koenings-Haroutunian Census in its current PR62 PCGS Secure holder. This distinguished 1828 proof quarter is sure to inspire spirited bidding when it crosses the block. Ex: George Earle Collection (H. Chapman, 6/1912), lot 3065; Hillyer Ryder Collection; Louis Eliasberg Collection, duplicates and other properties (New Netherlands, 6/1957), lot 1150; Eugene Gardner Collection (Stack's, 2/1965), lot 1630; Auction '82 (RARCOA, 8/1982), lot 713; Auction '90 (Superior, 8/1990), lot 1076; Robert W.
