Fanning Island Fanning Island Plantations £1 ND (1940s) Pick 100. The full note as it was meant to be viewed, with all features as perfect as the day it was printed. The design is known to many collectors, as the designs were cut and used as cinema tickets, and then redenominated to be used as one and two shillings notes. This one however, was most likely preserved by an astute collector among the soldiers stationed there in 1942, which was the original reason for these interim notes. As the Fanning Islands became a staging ground for US operations in the Pacific with large amounts of troops, the supply of locally circulating Australian pounds was not enough. Manager RG Garrett ordered 3000 of these notes from Hawaii to fill the immediate gap, and circulated until the conclusion of World War II. A very appealing example, especially as a complete note and with all original features and stainless paper. A serial number near the end of the expected print run is seen.
