About Uncirculated 55
French Equatorial Africa Gourvernement General Bon de Caisse 1000 Francs 1940 Pick 4s Specimen. Collectors will undoubtedly remember that we have featured this striking design only once before - an issued example from the Ruth Hill Collection. Wild issued notes of this design are known, this is the first time that a Specimen has been publically offered. The full counterfoil is included on this example, which was cut off and retained on all issued ones. Colors of the underprint featuring a man rowing is excellent. No signatures are seen in the space for Le Tresorier General, which was painstakingly hand-signed on issued examples. There is also no embossed seal for French Equatorial Africa, as this note was not issued. Further research indicates this note was prepared after the main print run ended, up to 1944 when almost all notes were redeemed for new "official" notes. This is understandable as these were emergency notes issued by Free France which were pressed into service to pay troops and government workers as quickly as possible, hence skipping any Specimen or extended design stage. Issued examples known so far bear an O or R series, with a five digit serial number. This example bears a W series, with a longer six digit serial number which is also quite high. Nevertheless, all features of this storied and historically important design. PMG About Uncirculated 55. From the Feeling Good CollectionHID07501242017
