Session C, Lot 40066

Estimate: 350 USD   |   Starting price: 180 USD Price realized: 360 USD

COLOMBIA. 1799/8/7-JJ Escudo. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Carlos IV (1788-1808). Restrepo 84.15. UNC Detail — Scratch (PCGS).

One of the more interesting overdates in the series, with the final digit punched over an 8 and a 7. A bold die crack from the rim to the back of the portrait undoubtedly limited the lifespan of this die. Frosty and original, with nicely toned surfaces and good visual appeal. A scrape from the rim to the forehead of the portrait is noted but fades in hand.
From Glendining's sale of November 1971, lot 448.
