Silver Certificates
Highest Graded 1880 "Black Back" $10 Silver Certificate of Deposit

Friedberg 288 (W-1491). 1880 $10 Silver Certificate of Deposit. PCGS Currency Gem New 66 PPQ.
Offered here is an incredibly well preserved example of this popular $10 "Black Back" Robert Morris note. This plate C note features large margins and bright, creamy white paper. The plate impression is sharply executed, complemented by a boldly inked brown overprint with the round Treasury Seal at top center and large Roman numeral X below. Dark blue serial numbers are deeply embossed into the paper at bottom left and top right. The printed signatures of Bruce and Gilfillan are stacked to the lower right. The black printed back design displays SILVER in large letters within an ornamental panel at center. This is one of just two examples of the catalog number to receive a 66 PPQ grade from PCGS Currency with none graded finer. This note last sold in a June 2007 auction for a record price of $49,450. It is no less exceptional now than it was then.

Silver Certificates of Deposit, Series of 1880

Silver Certificates of Deposit, per their official name, were antecedents to Silver Certificates. These did not circulate widely but seem to have been mostly held by banks and agencies. The basic motifs of the preceding type of 1878 are continued, but now with changes in the overprint. The back remains unchanged.

PCGS Population: 2, none finer.
