$500 Silver Certificate of Deposit Proof

Friedberg 345a (W-4168). 1878 $500 Silver Certificate of Deposit. PCGS Currency Very Choice New 64 PPQ. Proof.
This is an impressive $500 Silver Certificate proof printed on India paper at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Charles Sumner is seen at right with the engraved signatures of Scofield and Gilfillan to the lower right of center. The area at bottom left of the center was reserved for a hand signed counter signature on the issued notes. A large 500 counter is located in the top left corner with a large ornamental design element below. The serial number panels each display six perforated zeros. This proof is unpublished in Hessler. It is an incredibly important item, being the only manner in which collectors can secure a representation of this 1878 $500 type.

The 1878 $500 Silver Certificates of Deposit are noncollectable. A single issued example is known, countersigned by A.U. Wyman and featuring a large red Treasury Seal with rays. That example is permanently housed in the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution.

PCGS Population: 1; none finer.
From Stack's sale of September 2010, lot 1076.
