Compelling "Triple Signature" $10,000 Gold Certificate Proof

Friedberg 1223 (W-5344). 1882 $10,000 Gold Certificate. PCGS Currency Choice New 63 PPQ. Proof.
Other than the cancelled Series of 1900 $10,000 Gold Certificates, no issued large size currency notes of the $10,000 denomination are available to collectors. This Series of 1882 $10,000 Gold Certificate proof is printed with bold black inks on bright India paper. At left is a portrait of Andrew Jackson, to right is 10,000 within an oval die counter. Six perforated zeros are seen at bottom left and top right. Engraved signatures of Bruce and Gilfillan are stacked to the lower right. At bottom center is an open space reserved for the autographed signature of the assistant treasurer of the U.S. in New York City, which would appear on issued notes. Circulating examples would have been issued from and payable at the assistant treasurer's office in New York and would have featured a brown Treasury Seal at center. They would have been countersigned by Thomas C. Acton. The presently offered proof is believed to be unique or nearly so. This is the only example we have offered. What is certain is that the opportunity to own a BEP printed example of any large size $10,000 note from the Series of 1882 is exceptionally rare.

PCGS Population: 1; none finer.
From Stack's sale of September 2010, lot 1124.
