New York
High Grade Poughkeepsie Lazy Deuce

Poughkeepsie, New York. $2 Original. Friedberg 387 (W-340). The Fallkill NB. Charter #659. PCGS Currency New 61 PPQ.
Offered is a beautifully crisp Original Series "Lazy Deuce" from this Poughkeepsie bank that received its federal charter in December of 1864. Despite what the numeric grade would suggest the margins are mostly full save for a tight bottom margin that enters the design slightly on the left end. The paper is bright and creamy white. Bold penned signatures are seen as is a bright cherry red overprint. The vignette at left is creatively titled "Woman holding Flag." The large decorative 2 on its side that encompasses the right two-thirds of the note accounts for the "Lazy Deuce" nickname of this iconic design type. The scene on the back is "Sir Walter Raleigh, 1585" and shows Raleigh exhibiting corn from the New World while smoking tobacco from a large pipe. These were engraved and printed by the National Bank Note Company whose imprint appears on both the face and back of the note.

PCGS Population: 1; 7 finer.
From Heritage Auctions' sale of January 2005, lot 18697.
