Very Rare Issued 1836 Spanish Indemnity Loan Certificate

United States of America. Act of June 7, 1836. Issued Claim for $651.08. Hessler X192. Choice Very Fine.
A fully accomplished and historic certificate from an interesting enactment by the Congress, in the aftermath of Spain's acceptance of reparations due to Americans (whose ships, cargo, and other property were seized over many years) by the Spanish courts. In this instance, the certificate is a tangible artifact explaining its financial history in rich details, with all the facts spelled out in the text, only the background story is left on shore. Fully issued certificate on cream colored bond paper. 20.5cm by 19.0cm. No imprint. Left end black printed indented style with ornate borders top and bottom Verso blank for endorsements and official stampings. Issued to Joseph A. Clay for his approved portion (claim) due from the settlement (Indemnity) for $651.08 out of aggregate authorization total of $599,850.28 awarded from the Spanish courts in 1834 to be administered by the United States using these certificates. Dated March 5, 1841. Signed by the Register in blue lower right. Multiple endorsements on the back including upper left Ninth Installment stamping. Light folds. A bright and vivid piece purchased at the Strasburg Stock & Bond auction and show in 1995. Quite a choice example of a very rare financial certificate.

From the John E. Herzog Collection; the Eighth Annual Strasburg Sale #135 (R.M. Smythe & Co., January 27-28, 1995, lot 1172).
