ATTICA. Athens. Ca. 440-404 BC. AR tetradrachm (24mm, 16.50 gm, 8h). AU, lt porosity. Mid-mass coinage issue. Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet ornamented with three laurel leaves and vine scroll / AΘE, owl standing right, head facing; olive sprig and crescent moon behind, all within incuse square. HGC 4, 1597. SNG Copenhagen 31-40. Kroll 8. The style of the obverse on this specimen is quite interesting - the vine scroll is more compact than typical, along with displaying only two short shoots, Athena's hairline is high relief as opposed to the usual single plain on the mid-mass issues, and the three leaves on the visor are narrow and close together. The owl has exceptionally large eyes, but has the single wing form as expected in the mid-mass series. Perhaps this is a late transitional piece, ca. 450 BC, or possibly imitative. A very attractive and intriguing coin in every sense.HID05401242017
