Eppillus Carnyx. c.AD1-15. Silver unit. 15mm. 1.30g. Laureate head left, EPPIL in front, beaded border./ Warrior on horse right holding carnyx, ringed-pellet above, EPPILL below, beaded border. ABC 399, VA 441, BMC 1132, DK 117, S 111. CCI 02.1014 (this coin). Good VF, bright silver, magnificent horseman, full inscription. EXTREMELY RARE only eleven others recorded, including four chipped or damaged. Ex Chris Fox collection, found Springhead, Kent.

It’s thirteen years since we’ve had one (CCI 05.0222, Chris Rudd List 81, no.24) and this one has a much sharper head and a much clearer inscription. Dr John Sills says Sam’s head (ABC 369) “appears to be a stylised copy of the Eppillus silver, with a coarser face…Notwithstanding this there is an argument for the bust on the Sam silver being a Celticized head that was tidied up into a more classical style on the Carnyx type” (Divided Kingdoms, p.76).
