Saloninus (born c. AD 242) was still a child when this coin was struck: Gallienus had first raised his eldest son Valerian II (born c. AD 240) to the rank of Caesar, but when he died during the summer of AD 258 the title was bestowed on his younger son. He only became Augustus shortly before being executed in AD 260, when Cologne capitulated in front of the rebel com- mander Postumus.
