GREEK COINS FROM THE ABOU TAAM FAMILY COLLECTION. THRACE. ABDERA. Stater, about 365-361 BC. AR 12.40 g. Griffin with curved wings leaping l. from ground. Rev. EΠ API - ΣT/AΓ - O-PEΩ Youthful Dionysos, wearing himation, nude to waist, seated l. on the back of a panther standing r., holding transverse thyrsus with his l. hand, cantharus in his outstretched r. hand; all within shallow incuse square. May, Abdera 236,398 (this specimen, illustrated on p. 237, fig. 2); Chryssanthaki, Abdère p. 122; Lorber, Amphipolis / Appendix 3,178a.
Of the highest rarity, probably the second specimen known. Beautiful classical style
with an outstanding reverse design. Marvellous old cabinet toning. Extremely fine
