Garrett's Bijou Gold Changer. Fine. A turn-of-the-century cast iron device for changing gold sovereigns and half sovereigns into equivalent amounts of silver coins. The facade is domed and decorated in Art Nouveau style, with two slots for sovereigns and half sovereigns and two drawers for delivering silver coins. The front is hinged and lockable, and the inside door is inscribed OLE PROPRIETORS PATENTEES/CLEMENT, GARRETT & CO./NEWCASTLE ON TYNE/MAKERS/ GEO. SALTER & CO./ WEST BROMWICH. A large central column holds a mechanism for receiving the gold coins and a large tin box, possibly for storing silver coins. Two flanking columns, with doors, hold a number of circular tin holders designed to deliver the silver coins in change. A large, two-compartment drawer extends across the bottom. More circular tin holders are arrayed on dowels on the outside of the changer. A spare key is located inside the large tin box, and the primary key is taped to the top. Approximately 12 x 6 x 11 inches. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.HID05401242017
