A sharp and attractive piece of fine style
SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.34 g, 7 h), circa 450-440. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in both; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in exergue, ketos to right. Rev. ΣYRAKOΣI-ON Diademed head of Arethusa to right, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 571 (V287/R391). Jameson 769 (same dies). SNG ANS 184 (same dies). A sharp and attractive piece of fine style. Very minor flatness and light pitting on the reverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
