BIAFRA. Crown, 1969. NGC AU-58.
KM-5. Bust of Chief of State Chuwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu facing right, "REPUBLIC OF BIAFRA - 1969" around; Reverse: Single Palm tree, "INDEPENDENCE AND LIBERTY - ONE CROWN" around. Likely struck to commemorate the second anniversary of independence, though Biafra would not last much more than a year after this striking, the state ultimately reverting back to Nigerian control after civil war, malnutrition and disease claimed over two million lives. One of only four pieces seen in recent memory, this example displays quite nicely, with moderate purplish-gray tone in the fields that mixes with light handling that defines the grade. VERY RARE and an important issue for both world type and African crown collectors.

From the Collection of Dr. James Eustace Bizzell, II.
