COLOMBIA. 8 Escudos, 1776-P SF. Popayan Mint. Charles III (1759-88). PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield.
Fr-36; Restrepo-M73.18; KM-50.2; Cal-type-17#129. A desirable and sought after date and a key to the series given its absence from major sales of the past like the Eliasberg Collection. One of most attractive we've seen, this example showcases a sharp strike with abundant luster remaining in fields and pleasing orange peel toning in the peripheral areas. The surfaces are also notably clean for the grade, with more marks visible on the PCGS-graded MS-61 that we just sold as part of the Eldorado Collection (1/2018 - Lot 11187 @ $5,640) than this piece. Without question, a coin that is sure to attract considerable attention in this immensely eye appealing quality.
