Magnificent 100 Drachmai of George I
GREECE. 100 Drachmai, 1876-A. Paris Mint. George I. PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield.
KM-51; Fr-13; Karamitsos-166. One year type from a mintage of only 76 pieces. A coin of epic significance, important not only due to its mintage, the lowest for any circulating Greek issue in the 19th century, but also for its high denomination, which went unmatched in Greek coinage until his grandson, George II's 5th Anniversary of his second reign in 1940. One of the finer examples seen as well, this lightly circulated piece showcases strong reflective characteristics in the fields and sharp definition, attributable to a bold strike, over George I's bust as well as the reverse coat of arms. As is typical, several light contact marks appear over the surfaces, but their severity and frequency is of little visual concern; undoubtedly the finest example seen on the market in a number of years. A monumental opportunity for the Greek specialist to acquire arguably the most highly sought coin from this nation's modern history.
