Roman marble old woman portrait as Livia Augusta Drusilla
Early 1st century AD; height cm 25; This portrait of an elderly Roman woman conveys an air of gravitas and realism, following the verism style of the late Republican age that shows the imperfections of the subject, such as warts, wrinkles and furrows. Like most portraits of Roman women, this one can be dated closely by the hairstyle, which combines a braided bun worn high on the head and the so-called nodus (a flat braid pulled back over the top of the head). The hairstyle and the expression of the eyes resembles the young Livia Augusta portraits; Ex BFA, Auction 36, lot 89; Swiss private collection; privately purchased in 1978.
