Session I, Lot 92

Estimate: 100 GBP   |   Starting price: 80 GBP Price realized: 150 GBP
English Coins from the Collection of the Late Dr John Hulett (Part X)

Henry VI (First reign, 1422-1461), Rosette-Mascle issue, Penny, Calais, mm. cross V on obv. only, rosette after henricvs, mascle after rex, rosette after is’, 0.90g/10h (Whitton –; N 1450; S 1865). Edge a little ragged in places, otherwise nearly extremely fine and toned, scarce £100-£120

Provenance: Bt S. Mitchell September 2010.

This would seem to be a very early issue of the Rosette-mascle penny at Calais. Whitton only records reverse dies reading calis’ as mules with Annulet or Annulet-Trefoil obverses
