English Coins from the Collection of the Late Dr John Hulett (Part XI)

Charles I (1625-1649), Tower mint, Sixpence, Gp B, type 1a1, 1626/5, mm. cross Calvary on obv., negro’s head (over cross on steps) on rev., 2.67g/12h (SCBI Brooker 577, this coin; N 2236; S 2807). Good fine, reverse better, the combination of mint-marks extremely rare £200-£260

---

Provenance: J.G. Brooker Collection; R.A. Shuttlewood Collection, SNC June 2001 (HS 0610).

Neither the overdate nor the reverse mintmark is mentioned in the Brooker Sylloge. The SNC entry notes the overdate but gives the reverse mark as cross Calvary over lis. The vendor’s ticket attributes this specimen to the brief lightweight issue of autumn 1626, but the coin is very slightly clipped between 1 and 5 o’clock on obverse (and corresponding on reverse) and it is the cataloguer’s opinion that it might well have weighed close to 3.00g when struck
