European market developments
Markets drifting apart
Discussions about customs tariffs, bureaucratic hurdles for imports and exports, and a lack of knowledge about local customs are hampering smooth cooperation between coin dealers in Europe and coin collectors in the United States. This is a problem because the US is central to the modern coin market. Many impulses originate there.
The American market is particularly influential when it comes to understanding coin collecting as an investment.
We should not forget that anyone who invests in coins can become an enthusiastic collector. This opens up a whole new pool of potential collectors. Coins as investment objects provide further access to numismatics, beyond traditional coin clubs and academia.
Collectors’ market vs. investors’ market?
The Greysheet podcast on European market developments certainly does not seek to pit collectors against investors. On the contrary, its aim is to give both groups an understanding of the rules of the other. Ursula Kampmann wants to inspire investors with the historical significance of European coins and, together with John Feigenbaum, explain to collectors from all over the world how they can use their collections as an investment.
Ursula Kampmann says: “It’s not about whether the collector’s market or the investor’s market is better, but about the fact that both markets coexist and intermingle. A collector can certainly be an investor, and an investor can be a collector. In addition, current developments offer opportunities like never before, especially for collectors with limited means, if preservation is not important to them. However, they must then be aware that their coins have no chance on the investor market. The English-language podcast is about explaining things, not changing them. Listeners should draw their own conclusions and do what makes the most sense and fits best into their lives.”
