Consignment
In the numismatic context, ‘consignment’ refers to the act of sending or handing over coins and medals to an auction house or other institution for sale or valuation. Consignment is usually carried out by the owner of the coins or medals, who concludes a contract with the auction house or other institution. Details such as the terms of the consignment, the conditions of the sale and the commission agreements are specified.
Consignment enables the owner to make his numismatic objects accessible to a wider group of buyers and potentially realise higher sales prices. At the same time, it offers the auction house the opportunity to offer a varied selection of coins and medals and to promote trade in the numismatic community.
